The Circle is my favorite tool from Uptick. It’s always fresh because it’s always helping us to center our minds upon where God is speaking to us and how we’re going to respond to what He is doing. Hearing His voice and then doing His will is always the most important work of the disciple. This past week, Paul refreshed our minds and hearts with the Circle as some of us from Uptick networks throughout the state gathered at Missio Alliance’s conference in Northern Virginia.
Paul centered on the concept of repentance (metanoia)—that we not only need to grow our thinking and align our actions and beliefs with it, but we also need to change our beliefs. I’ve been meditating on what he shared this week as I consider what it means to follow Jesus in America in this current cultural moment. |
The last thing that Paul said was, "Once your mind is changed, then you can receive the things that God has for you."
This resonated with me as a pattern of scripture where the people of God are consistently expecting something of God based on their own preconceived notion of how things might work. The Israelites expected a deliverance from Assyria/Babylon that would include their sovereign independence. Later, the Israelites expected a messiah that would overtake Rome and assert their independence. God delivered them both times, just not how they expected Him to. In this current cultural moment, let us not repeat the mistakes of the people of God with preconceived notions of what He is doing. However, let us seek Him together and consider: what metanoia is God inviting us into during these critical times?
