Matt Boschen, a member of the 2018 Uptick Core cohort, is the senior pastor of Effort Baptist Church in Palmyra, VA. He recently took time to answer a few questions:
Q: How has Uptick influenced where you are now?
I was participating in an Uptick Alum group and could feel the Spirit stirring a move. I never thought I would leave Hanover County. I told the search team there was a sub ten-percent chance we’d move, but never tell the Holy Spirit a percentage chance. We had all the reasons: we had just purchased a house four months before our first conversation, our families are all there, our friends, contacts, and the list could go on.
John Chandler is part of the reason I received the first call. Sitting with other Uptick alum like Trey Critzer and asking questions about the church confirmed how the Spirit was leading.
So, Uptick’s relational network and training in listening to the Holy Spirit helped lead me here.
Q: What is your favorite Uptick tool or takeaway in this season that you're in right now?
I think finding collaborators is my favorite takeaway from Uptick. Finding other Jesus-loving people who are running after what He has for them in their context is invaluable. When I pick up the phone and chat with folks, it's a blessing to hear common struggles, encouragements, and to pray through solutions.
Q: How is God getting your attention at the moment?
He is continually reminding me that he is sufficient. In ministry, I find it easy to let the problems of people and the church pile up on my shoulders. Multiple times this year I’ve watched God solve problems that I could not. I’m reminded that prayer is always the greater work, even if I try a couple solutions before getting there.
Q: Are there any life updates that you'd love to share with your Uptick Alumni network?
Life is good. I’ve got three boys at home: Eddie (9), Wally (5), Teddy (3). Days are filled with adventure, joy, and overstimulation. Ashley (Core 2020) is executive director of Habitat for Humanity in our county, and we love caring for our community together.
We're also looking for friends to get into good trouble with, so if anyone has an idea for ministry partnership, please reach out!
